What Do I Really Need

Vaccinations:
When you come to see us for advice on any vaccinations that may be required for your trip, we will advise you of those that are
necessary and those that are optional. If you have an international vaccination certificate book, then please bring it with you so we can update it for international border control.

In general we recommend that all those travelling overseas should be up to date, together with any boosters, with their various childhood vaccinations (immunisations). These include:

  • Tetanus and Diphtheria (in 1 vaccination)
  • Polio (for travel to a region with endemic polio)
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella
  • Haemophilus b influenza
  • Whooping cough
  • Hepatitis B
  • Some countries insist on a Yellow Fever vaccination before you are permitted entry.
Yellow Fever is the only vaccination that is compulsory for entry, into certain countries, by the World Health Organization.

Optional Vaccinations:
Depending on where you are going for your trip we may recommend the following preventative vaccinations:

  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Hepatitis A and B (combination vaccination)
  • Typhoid
  • Cholera
  • Japanese Encephalitis
  • Rabies
  • Tick-borne Encephalitis

and finally, last but by no means least, Meningitis. For travellers to certain countries in Africa and for those going to Saudi Arabia particularly during the Haj and Umra, this would be a particularly
important vaccination to have.

Malaria:
Malaria is the killer of 2-4 million people a year. It affects 400 million per year, and it is a terrible infection to get. In some parts of the world malaria is resistant to certain anti-malarial medicines. If you are going to a malaria-area, we suggest that you discuss this in detail with us, so we can give you the best available choice of medications for the area that you are travelling to.

There is NO vaccination for Malaria available in New Zealand. Two thirds of Malaria cases can be prevented by advice on how to prevent Mosquito bites. We will discuss this with you when we consult with you about the plan for your trip.
